Not your normal Saturday night, but one you'll remember

This weekend is the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life. If you have never participated in this event I highly recommend you go to Mooberry Field on the WSU Campus on Saturday and support the participants, or better yet get out there and walk with them!

The "relay" consists of teams of people taking turns walking or running around a track for 24 hours. The goal is for each team to have at least one person on the track area for the duration of the event. And while this seems like great exercise, the event is so much more.

The first lap, aptly named the Survivor’s Lap, is walked by those who are currently fighting cancer or who have previously faced cancer. Additionally, at dusk Luminaria bags, decorated in honor of those battling cancer, have won the fight against cancer or in memory of those lost to cancer, are placed around the track and lit. I can't explain to you how moving it is to walk around the track for a few hours, looking at the brightly colored bags that glow with hope for a cure. Honestly, show up at twilight and see for yourself. I promise you won’t be the only one.

Many of the teams stay and camp out for the night, offering their teammates on the track support and other forms of motivation. ACS often provides music, sometimes live, to keep the participants energized. It’s a fun event for all involved and knowing that your efforts could help cure cancer adds to the excitement. Again, I seriously recommend you get involved now and spend your Saturday doing something worthwhile. You won’t regret it! You might even find that you giving part of this one day could be life changing.

For more information on the event, or how you can get involved, please visit the Pullman Relay for Life website.

Fine Cuisine

The city of Pullman, surprisingly, has much to offer when it comes to different types of fine cuisine. Many cougars, including myself, were surprised to come back to school and find a few new restaurants to add to the list…

Thai Ginger, a new authentic Thai restaurant, opened up on July 16th, 2007 in the location of the old Pullman Bar and Grill.

“Well obviously it is not exactly like the food in Thailand, but it is the closest thing you can find around here,” said Haley M. Deking, a senior marketing major, who studied abroad in Thailand this summer. “I like that they offer an authentic Thai menu in an American city. Also, the atmosphere of the restaurant made me feel like I am back in Thailand, I would definitely recommend it to anyone.”

Thai Ginger is run and owned by Song Soukkhammala, who has 20 years of Thai restaurant experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Try it out and let us know what you think…

Try something different this Saturday

Usually Saturday mornings are spent watching football or hanging out at the local breakfast hot spot. Maybe it is time to get out in the crisp fall air and support the local community while still sipping on coffee and getting your morning breakfast. The Moscow Farmers Market is an upbeat and different way to spend the morning.

Located in the Friendship Square next to the Moscow Hotel, the Moscow Farmers Market features fresh fruit, vegetables, and pastries, local trinkets, and live music every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This Saturday enjoy the sounds of local artist Mark Holt from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Eight is early, but the Moscow Farmers Market is well worth it. Drink some coffee, eat some amazing fresh and local food, and take in the fresh air. Who knows, the farmers market might even become the new Saturday morning hot spot for you and your friends.

Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge

As many of you know, the Dave Matthews Band made its annual trip to the gorge this past labor day weekend to amaze and entertain thousands of dedicated fans. For those of you who don't know, you must make the trip at least once in your lifetime. Dave is something that is more than just a concert; the three day experience, because that is really what it is, was equally as fun as it always has been. I had the pleasure of making it to the Sunday show, and I was blown away! Dave played songs such as Crash Into Me, American Girl, Bartender, and all the rest of the best. The opening act, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, was equally great; I will say that they made a fan out of me from the few songs they played.

This being the last time I will see DMB at the gorge in my college career, rolling up my sleeping bag and tent Monday morning was bittersweet. But I will be back someday, there is no way I could say away for too long!

In the words of Dave himself "Celebrate we will, cause life is short but sweet for certain."
